youth performance pathway, strength, conditioning for kids

The Youth Performance Pathway (YPP) started as a mission to introduce kids to safe, structured strength training, learning to make their way around a gym whilst making well-informed decisions on exercise selection, reps, sets and intensity.

Over time, this has become a systematised scheme of work, which can mould and adapt itself around the individuality of the young person eg do they already play competitive sport? Is this their first experience in the gym?
All of these considerations are taken to create a training programme for all of our young athletes, not just for peak athletic development, but to thrive and sustain a healthier, fitter life

YPP in the Community

We have recently registered our services as an Alternate Provision with RMBC.
We run YPP sessions for a local school, delivering YPP weekly during term time.
These are young people aged 11-17 who are out of mainstream schools for a variety of reasons including: Exclusion, emotional and behavioural difficulties, medical reasons, pregnancy and young mothers.

Services delivered: weekly physical education sessions
Timescales: May 2023 - ongoing

YPP have been working with Brownhill Learning Community for the past 6 months to provide the twice weekly sessions for pupils at Brownhill Learning Community.

Brownhill Learning Community comprises of Brownhill School and Rochdale Pupil Referral Service. They provide educational provision for pupils who are out of mainstream schools for a variety of reasons that include exclusion, emotional and behavioural difficulties, medical reasons, pregnancy and young mothers.

The gym helped me focus, it helped with my mental health and motivated me. I am looking forward to attending the sessions again.

Activity Overview:

  • YPP initially began working with Brownhill Learning Community to provide pupils with taster sessions in football and physical activity. The sessions were delivered by YPP in conjunction with Will Ferry Soccer School (WFSS) as part of 6-week
fully-funded programme. YPP were able to deliver this free of charge with the help of funding from FES and gbpartnerships foundation.

  • The older pupils took part in the sessions at Trident Health and Performance centre, giving them an understanding of physical activity and fitness programmes delivered in a professional gym environment. The younger children took part in supervised WFSS sessions in school with Head Coach, Tom Feighan, receiving professional input and having fun whilst learning some sharp football skills.

  • The taster sessions have now progressed into a longer-term partnership between YPP and Brownhill Learning Community with twice weekly, hour long sessions delivered by coaches with an educational background.

  • Sessions range from 3 to 4 participants up to around 12, depending on the level of 121 support needed. Along with gym etiquette, YPP offer pupils with nutritional advice and qualifications in softer skills such as leadership.

I learnt how to use equipment, it was fun, good to socialise out of school with our class, the staff joined in and that was a good.

Our Impact:

  • To date around 25 young people have benefited from the programme with most coming back for repeat sessions.

  • For many of the young people taking part in the sessions, the gym environment is completely new to them. The programme has given them opportunity to learn a range of skills that they will take with them into all aspects of their day-to-day lives.

  • Whilst the programme is in its early stages, Jackie Robinson from Brownhill Learning Community commented on how impressed she is with the staff from Trident & WFSS, particularly with how the team have adapted to the needs of the young people.

“I am very impressed with how amazingly the staff from Trident & WFSS have adapted to the needs of our young people - as they can be very challenging at times. We look forward to continuing working with Trident & WFSS. Thank you for all the staff input.”
